All hardwoods will fade to a soft silver gray over time. depending on the amount of exposure this could take years or a few months. This is the natural patina that occurs with all hardwoods. Some like the weathered look, and some like to keep the original color. You have the option of sealing your hardwoods with a product like Cabot Hardwood Timber Oil which is available in several color tints (Ipe Flame/Walnut) that will darken or enrich the color of your deck. Cabot Timber Oil must be wiped on and wiped off quickly before it sets. Do not apply in sunlight. Ipe may take 2-3 applications before the Timber oil will settle in. Oil applications are easy and do not require brushing on. Oil penetrating sealers work like a stain and can be applied liberally over the surface. Use a clean rag to wipe the excess and let dry. This process can be done once or multiple times per year to maintain the beautiful color of the wood.

After initial installation we recommend doing the oil application several times to allow the oil sealer to properly penetrate the hardwood.

Ipe seen above will eather to a soft silver gray color over time. We call it silver Ipe. To some this is a desired effect as the silver gray may be a better fit for the decor. Others will want to maintain the color.

A good quality oil penetrating sealer such as Cabot Stain Australian Timber oil (pictured above) will enrich the natural beauty of the wood back to its original form. the penetrating oil will remove all surface scratches as well.

If over the years severe stains develop from planted pots or oil and greese stains a light sanding of the surface is recommended followed by the oil application.

When applying the sealer it is important to wipe on the oil and follow with a clean rag to wipe any excess oil up before it cures. The oil will take aproximatly 5-6 hours to dry completely so refrain from walking on the surface before dry.
